• The first step to winning at euchre is learning when to make the trump suit and when to pass. A lot of players don’t like to pass the suit when they have the chance to name the trump, but it may be in your best interest. Remember that the scoring in euchre is smaller for the makers in the hand. If you name the trump and lose the hand then you’re going to lose an extra point compared to if you let the other team make the trump.

• You always want to make sure you play to win at least one trick when you’re not the maker. If you have an ace then you may be able to take a trick with it as long as your opponents have the same suit and can’t trump your ace. You usually won’t be able to take a trick using the trump suit so I’d avoid leading out with a trump card when you’re not the maker unless you have the right bower.

• When playing euchre online it’ll be difficult to play with the same partner, but if possible you should try playing with the same partner as much as possible. By playing with the same partner you’ll be able to learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses and it’ll help you have an advantage over teams that have never played with each other.

• The more you play euchre, the better player you’re going to become. You should try practicing the game as much as possible so that you can continue learning new strategies and techniques. There are several online websites where you can play for free and then when you’re ready you can move onto playing for real money. I wouldn’t advise playing for real money until you’ve played the game quite a bit since it takes new players a little while to learn how to win at euchre.

• If the other team names the trump suit you should never lead out with the trump suit as you’ll be playing right into their hand. You should try and play a high non trump card such as an ace if possible so that you can win the first trick and not have to worry about giving away 2 points.

• When one of the players on the other team decides to go alone you need to always make sure that you stop them from taking all 5 tricks, since if they do they’ll earn 4 points. You need to make sure you play a suit that you have a lot of since your partner may be able to trump it and take the trick. If you don’t have a lot of the same suit then you should try leading out with an ace of a non trump suit in hopes that your opponent has a card of the same suit that they need to play.

• When you name the trump suit you should play one of the bowers (preferably the trump bower) so that you can extract the trump cards that you don’t have. By doing this you’ll be able to get rid of a few trump cards, which will help ensure you walk away with three tricks and the points for that hand.

• When you have several of the same suit you should always try and save the highest one until the end so that you can try and steal a trick at the end from your opponents. The only problem is that your opponent may trump the trick, which would give them the trick.

• Just because you can name the trump suit doesn’t mean that you should. Since you earn more points for euchring your opponents you don’t necessarily want to name the trump suit unless you’re almost certain you’ll be able to earn at least three tricks. If you have a the right bower and the trump ace then chances are you’ll be find with naming the trump suit since your opponent should also win a trick, but anything worse then the hand above isn’t worth naming the trump suit.

• Never lead out the trump suit ace unless you have both of the bowers in your hand. You want to chase out the bowers before you play your trump ace so that you know for certain you’re taking the trick down. I’ve seen a lot of my partners lead out the ace and then the opposition will come back with the left bower and steal the trick and often will end up stealing the points for that hand.

After you go through the euchre rules page you’ll have a very good idea of how to play euchre and you’ll almost be ready to start playing the game. Before you’re ready to begin playing you should take the time to read the extra tips that we have here, which will help you play euchre at a higher level then your competition. If you’re going to be playing online euchre for real money then you want to make sure that you’re as prepared as possible to win.

• You should never select the trump suit unless you know you’re going to win at least three tricks. If you have the two bowers and an ace or king then you should be able to take three tricks and it’d be worth selecting the trump. You’re only going to upset your partner if you select the trump suit and end up losing the hand as it’ll cost your team 2 points.

• Although selecting the trump suit is what everyone wants to do typically, it isn’t always the best decision. If you don’t have a hand that can easily take down 2-3 guaranteed tricks then you should just pass up the opportunity.

• Save your bowers for the end of the hand when possible unless you have to play them to try and draw out other cards from your opponent’s. If you have the 9-10 of the trump suit then you’ll need to keep those and play the bowers beforehand to draw out the A-K-Q of the trump suit before playing the 9-10.

• If your opponents make the trump suit and you don’t have any of that suit don’t fret. You may be able to steal a trick or two depending on how you play your cards. Always play your lowest cards when the other team has played a suit you don’t have. For instance, if your opponent plays a heart and you have the option between playing the 9 or Ace of diamonds you should always play the 9 first. The reason is simple and it’s because your opponent could have the Queen of diamonds and you’ll be able to steal the trick off them by playing the ace against them, but this wouldn’t be the case if you already wasted the Ace and kept the 9.

Setting Up the Deck

For the sake of this article we’re only going to look at how to set-up the deck for the North American euchre rules. The 24 cards that you need to extract from your deck of cards are the Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens and Nines. The value of the cards is also really simple to remember. The trump suit beats all other suits whether or not the card is of higher value. The highest card is the Jack of the trump suit (Right Bower) and the second highest card is the Jack or the other same coloured suit (Left Bower). Other then that the value of the cards is the same as most games with Aces being high and going down from there.

Objective

The objective in euchre is for you and your partner to score more tricks then the other team in each hand. Since every player is dealt five cards each there are a total of five tricks per hand, which means that one team will always win the hand with 3+ tricks. In order to win the game in euchre you and your partner need to score 10 points before the other team does. Take a look below to find out how to score points in euchre.

Scoring

Scoring is simple in euchre, as all the possible outcomes in the hand have a set amount of points that you win. If your team is the “Makers” in the hand, which means you or your partner selected the trump suit then the scoring is as followed.

• The “Makers” score 1 point for winning 3-4 tricks and earn 2 points in they manage to take all 5 tricks in the hand.
• If the other team wins the hand it means the “Makers” got euchred and the other team will take 2 points.
• If anyone decides to “Go Alone” in the hand then they earn 1 point for winning 3-4 tricks and 4 points for 5 tricks.

Selecting the Trump Suit

After the dealer has dealt out five cards to each player in the hand the dealer needs to flip the top card on the remaining pile of cards face up. The player to the left of the dealer then has the chance to select the face up suit as the trump suit. If the player doesn’t want to then each other player will have the opportunity to do so if they wish. If a player decides to make the face up card the trump suit then the dealer can take the face up card for their own hand and discard a card they don’t need. If nobody selects a trump suit then each player gets a chance to name his or her own trump suit starting with the player to the left of the dealer. If you want to “Go Alone” in the hand you need to tell everyone this when you select the trump suit.

Gameplay

Once the trump suit has been you can start playing out the hand. In euchre you need to always play the same suit as the leader in the hand if you have that suit in your hand. The only exception is when you want to play the left bower since it’s considered to be the same as the trump suit. The goal in the game is to win each trick by playing the highest card possible. If you win the trick then you collect the cards and place them face down in front of you so that you can remember how many tricks you’ve won each hand.

Early In the Game

If your partner is the player to call the Trump suit by choosing or selecting the exposed card, keep this in mind: If you are in the lead, try playing an off-trump Ace. This is because your partner probably has a few high cards in the Trump suit and can win the hand while you set him/her up for success by playing your high cards.

If you’ve got one of the bowers, play that as well – for the same strategy. Also, if your partner leads after calling the suit, Trump them when you can. This will enable you to win more hands of Euchre. If your partner plays an Ace or a bower, only trump them when one of your opponents has already done so.

Late In The Game

Even when you have a poor hand, it proves to be advantageous to call the suit. While it may not be the best situation for you, it could probably be a worse one for them. Sometimes it’s better to give yourself a semi-decent situation if that means a weak one for your opponents.

On average, if you name a trump suit, there is a good chance that your partner will be able to grab at least one trick. When you think of this in terms of the game, if you’re able to take 2 tricks with your hand, it can be a safe call to name the trump

• Left of the dealer button may pass or “Accept” the face up card, discarding one card facedown. When this happens, no other player is allowed to bid.
• If the first player does not Accept, the option goes to dealer’s partner (across from dealer), next player and then dealer.
• If everyone passes, a second round of bidding will take place.

The group of players who choose the trump suit during a bidding round is referred to as the Makers. The remaining group is called Defenders.

Going Alone

With a good enough Euchre hand, a player has the option of “going alone”. For this to occur, their partner must place thier cards face down and sit out the hand. To go alone, a player must announce following the announcement of the trump suit, but before the first card is played. It’s possible that one player from each pair can go alone.

Hands

The Euchre player to the dealer’s left begins by playing any of his hand’s cards. Following players must play cards in the suit that was lead, if they have the cards. If not, any card is acceptable.

The highest card in the leading suit wins the trick — unless a trump card is played (in this instance, the highest trump card will win).

The winning player is the lead of the next hand.

Score

If 4 players are in a single hand, the Makers earn one point for taking three tricks. An additional point is awarded for winning all five. However, if the Makers fail to win at least 3, the defenders are awarded two points.

Going Alone points:

• Maker – win all 5 tricks and get 4 points. Win 3 or 4 tricks and get 1 point.
• Defender – win 3 or 4 tricks and get 2 points. Win all 5 tricks and get 4 points.

The first team to accumulate 10 points wins the game of Euchre.

Know the Cards

In any game of Euchre, there are seven trump cards available. As an average, six of the trumps are live (in players’ hands) with one buried. There is definitely potential for other variations of this, but that is the average.

As trump cards are played during each trick, keep track of them. That way, you are going to have a better idea of what can be played, and what will be face down. Obviously you’ll want to track the bowers as well.

Use Your Position

When you are just to the left of the dealer, the ‘eldest’ position, you’re at a bit of a disadvantage. This is because everyone will act after you have had the chance. Consequently, the further you are from the dealer, the better.

When you’ve got final position, play the lowest Trump card that will win the trick. This gives you the best shot for the next hand as well as a sure-win in the current hand.

When across from the dealer (who will be your partner), play safe cards that give you a chance to the trick.

Strategy for Going Alone in Euchre

Going alone in Euchre (playing the hand while your partner sits out). As you know from the rules of Euchre, when you go alone, you’re expected to get points. Play aggressively, but know which trump and bower cards you do not have, and plan around them with your strategy.

While playing against someone going alone, use your high cards early to try and keep them from winning all of the tricks. This can be the difference in giving up 1 point or 4 of them. That is one of the best Euchre tips that we’ve got to offer.

The game is played in teams of two, with four players. Partners sit across from each other at the playing table. Euchre uses only 24 playing cards: Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens and Nines — of all four suits. Knowing this is important for Euchre strategy.

When choosing who will deal, players usually deal until the first player receives a Jack. When that occurs, that player is the dealer of the first hand. The dealer button rotates clockwise.

Each player is dealt five cards, clockwise. The cards that remain are referred to as the kit, or kitty. The kit’s top card is face up, beginning the bidding. In turn, the dealer asks players if the suit of the face up card should be the Trump. If this is the case, the dealer picks it up and discards to retain the 5 card hand. If no player selects it, in turn each player is given the chance to name the trump suit. If this doesn’t happen, it’s a misdeal.

A trump suit (determined at the beginning of the hand) outranks any other card or suit, paying no attention to the actual value of the card.

Each partnership is attempting to be the first to score at least 10 points.

The Jack of the trump suit is the most valuable card and is called the “right bower”. The “left bower” is the Jack of the same color. Example: if the trump suit was Spades, the Jack of Spades would be the “right bower” and the Jack of Clubs would be called the “left bower”. The left bower is the second most valuable card in the game. Following the two bowers, standard card rankings go into effect – starting with Ace.

It is played with four players in two partnerships and a deck of 24 standard playing cards. Partners face each other across the table, and the 24 cards consists of the A, K, Q, J, 10, and 9 of each of the four suits.

When a suit is named as trumps, it will outrank any other suit regardless of the cards individual value. Euchre is similar to 500, in that it makes use of bowers. For example, if hearts is named trumps then the highest card is the Jack of hearts. This is referred to as the right bower. The second highest card is the left bower which is the other Jack of the trumps suits colour – in this case the Jack of diamonds.

The Deal

The dealer is initially selected at random and from then on rotates clockwise throughout the game. Each player is dealt 5 cards, with the next card being dealt face up on the table up to start the bidding. The dealer then offers in turn starting with the player on their left, if they would like the suit of the upturned card to be trumps.

Specifically the may choose to – Pass, Order Up, or Go alone.

Order Up

If a player chooses to order up, they then become the makers and between them and their partner they must win 3 of the 5 tricks. If the win all 5 tricks, double points will be awarded. The dealer must pick up the up card, and then discard a card from their hand.
Going Alone

If you have an exceptional good hand, you may wish to go alone, in this case, your partner lays down their cards and you play alone against your two opponents.
